Position summary: We are seeking a Civics Science AI Fellow to join UCLA and our academic medical center. This Fellow will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) at the intersection of civic science, specifically within healthcare. This unique postdoctoral position offers the opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research, exploring the intersection of AI, healthcare, and civic engagement. Key responsibilities and opportunities for this individual will include:

  • Examining the societal and ethical impacts of AI on healthcare delivery, patient outcomes, and community health
  • Analyzing how AI influences healthcare business models, policy, and community engagement
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to assess the longer-term implications of AI in healthcare
  • Engaging with community and patient groups to understand their perspectives on AI in healthcare
  • Conducting innovative AI research relevant to civic science challenges in healthcare
  • Collaborating with healthcare professionals, policy-makers, and scientists in interdisciplinary projects
  • Helping to communicate complex AI concepts to diverse, non-scientific audiences, fostering understanding and engagement
  • Leading initiatives addressing health disparities, patient engagement, and ethical aspects of AI in medicine

Qualifications. A successful candidate for this position will meet the following requirements:

  • PhD in Computer Science, AI, Data Science, or related fields, with a focus on healthcare applications, or PhD/MD in a related field (Medicine, Healthcare, Public Policy, AI Ethics, or similar) and demonstrated commitment to the above topics
  • Demonstrated understanding of AI’s role and impact in healthcare settings
  • Strong skills in qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • Excellent communication abilities, capable of bridging the gap between technology and public understanding
  • A commitment to ethical and socially responsible research in AI
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment
