There is increasing awareness of the prevalence of digestive-related diseases, such as irritable bowel disease (IBD) and Chron’s disease; and the importance of diet and nutrition on influencing the gut microbiome, with downstream impact on a given individual’s health. Of growing concern is the death rate attributable to colon cancer – a disease that is highly survivable, if caught early via regular screening. Working closely with our colleagues at UCLA’s Division of Digestive Diseases and others in UCLA Health, the Center for SMART Health is looking at how mHealth and other informatics-based methods can help improve patient outcomes in these different areas.
